13 Of The Best Animal Sidekicks In Film And Television

From classic Disney to ridiculous comedies, these animals stole our hearts.

Timon and Pumbaa (The Lion King)

Timon and Pumbaa (The Lion King)

Let's face it: Without these guys, Disney's The Lion King would have been one depressing movie. Timon and Pumbaa are the ultimate sidekicks. They supported Simba, even though they weren't particularly fond of the whole "lions are predators" thing, and Timon went as far as to dress in drag for him. True. Friends.

Baxter (Anchorman)

This dog saves the day in the original Anchorman as well as the sequel. He can talk to bears and he apparently will fight sharks to save Ron. He is man's best friend.

Marley (Marley and Me)

Marley (Marley and Me)

He's destructive and big and loud, but you really can't find a more loving dog. I guess you can't call him a sidekick, but he's still one of the best dogs out there and deserves a mention! Rest in peace, Marley. I'm okay, I swear.

Meeko (Pocahontas)

Meeko is one of the funniest sidekicks Disney ever created. He's a good friend to Pocahontas and always goes along with her plans (even if they involve jumping off a waterfall). And he loves food. So we can all identify with that.

Ohio Will Have No Executions In 2015

Due to ongoing litigation and in order to give state officials time to implement a new execution protocol, Gov. John Kasich’s administration moved all 2015 executions to 2016.

WASHINGTON — All Ohio executions scheduled for 2015 were moved to 2016 on Friday, according to information released by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

The move by Gov. John Kasich's administration was made, according to the department, in response to pending orders in ongoing federal court litigation over the state's execution protocol, to allow the department time to adopt and implement the state's new execution protocol, and "to provide DRC adequate time to secure a supply of the new execution drugs."

Ohio has not conducted an execution for more than a year, since Dennis McGuire's execution on Jan. 16, 2014. Witnesses to McGuire's execution — the first of three in the U.S. in which complications were detailed in 2014 — said he "appeared to be gasping for air for 10 to 13 minutes," as CNN reported at the time.

At the time, the state used a two-drug combination: midazolam and hydromorphone.

Midazolam was also in use during executions with complications in Oklahoma and Arizona and is at the center of a pending Supreme Court case out of Oklahoma.

In addition to the ongoing litigation before U.S. District Court Judge Gregory Frost, inmates also filed a new lawsuit in December, challenging a new law that makes elements of the execution process in Ohio secret.

After the fifth season aired, Parenthood showrunner Jason Katims told BuzzFeed News the sixth and final season would tackle the circle of life. And nearly every episode in the last season touched on the patriarch's failing health. In the Season 6 premiere, Zeek suffered a mini heart attack while celebrating his birthday in Las Vegas with his daughter Sarah (Lauren Graham). In the next episode ("Happy Birthday, Zeek"), his doctor told him he had exhausted all other, less invasive options, and needed to have heart surgery. But a strong-willed Zeek refused.

What Really Happened During The Blizzard Of 2015, In Two Maps

Here’s where the huge storm was forecast to dump feet of snow, and where it actually did.

Ryan Maue/WeatherBell Analytics

The map on the left was generated Sunday and shows how much snow the National Weather Service expected across the Eastern Seaboard. The teal-colored areas represent the most intense snowfall, and show how forecasters expected nearly 30 inches in New York City.

The map on the right was produced Wednesday and shows what really happened during the storm: the intense snowfall ended up further north and east, near Boston.

Both maps were created by WeatherBell Analytics, an independent weather firm, using NWS data. Ryan Maue, a meteorologist with WeatherBell, explained Tuesday why forecasters were so far off with their predictions.
